Microneedling: The Science of Collagen Induction
How creating controlled micro-injuries triggers your skin's most powerful repair mechanisms.
Microneedling — also known as collagen induction therapy (CIT) — is one of the most evidence-backed treatments in dermatology. The principle is elegantly simple: by creating thousands of controlled micro-punctures in the skin, we trigger the body's wound-healing cascade, resulting in new collagen and elastin production that remodels the skin from within.
The science of wound healing occurs in three phases. First, the inflammatory phase (0–48 hours): the micro-injuries trigger an immediate inflammatory response. Platelets aggregate at the wound sites, releasing growth factors and signalling molecules that recruit fibroblasts and other repair cells to the area.
Second, the proliferative phase (2–14 days): fibroblasts produce new collagen (primarily Type III initially), new blood vessels form (angiogenesis), and the extracellular matrix begins to remodel. This is when clients often notice their first improvements in skin texture and glow.
Third, the remodelling phase (14 days to 12+ months): the initial Type III collagen is gradually replaced by stronger Type I collagen. The skin's structural matrix becomes denser, more organised, and more resilient. This extended remodelling period is why microneedling results continue to improve for months after treatment.
Needle depth matters significantly. Shallow depths (0.25–0.5mm) are suitable for product penetration and mild rejuvenation. Medium depths (1.0–1.5mm) target fine lines, pigmentation, and moderate texture issues. Deeper settings (2.0–2.5mm) are used for acne scars, surgical scars, and stretch marks. At Hidden Clinic, we calibrate depth precisely based on treatment area and clinical goals.
When combined with PRP (the Vampire Facial protocol), the results are amplified. The micro-channels created by microneedling serve as direct delivery pathways for PRP's concentrated growth factors, significantly enhancing the regenerative response. Clinical studies show that PRP-enhanced microneedling produces superior outcomes compared to either treatment alone.
