What Causes Hair Loss in Your 20s?
Early-onset hair loss is more common than you think. We break down the science behind why it happens and what you can do about it.
Hair loss in your 20s can feel alarming, but it's far more common than most people realise. Studies suggest that approximately 25% of men who experience androgenetic alopecia begin noticing thinning before the age of 25. For women, the pattern is different but equally significant — diffuse thinning, widening parts, and increased shedding can all emerge during this decade.
The primary driver for most young adults is genetics. Androgenetic alopecia — the medical term for pattern hair loss — is driven by a sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone derived from testosterone. DHT miniaturises hair follicles over time, gradually producing thinner, shorter hairs until the follicle eventually stops producing visible hair altogether.
But genetics isn't the whole story. Hormonal fluctuations — particularly in women — can trigger significant shedding. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, and even starting or stopping hormonal contraception can all precipitate hair loss. This is why we always recommend comprehensive blood testing as part of our diagnostic approach.
Nutritional deficiencies play a larger role than many realise. Iron deficiency (with or without anaemia), low ferritin levels, vitamin D deficiency, and zinc insufficiency are all clinically associated with hair loss. Modern diets, especially restrictive ones, can leave gaps that directly impact hair growth cycles.
Stress — both physical and psychological — triggers a condition called telogen effluvium, where a disproportionate number of hairs are pushed into the resting (shedding) phase simultaneously. University pressure, career stress, relationship changes, and even intense exercise can all contribute.
The good news? Early intervention makes a significant difference. At Hidden Clinic, our Root Cause Analysis approach identifies the specific combination of factors driving your hair loss, allowing us to create a targeted treatment plan that addresses the actual cause — not just the visible symptoms. If you're noticing changes in your 20s, the best time to act is now.
